Fes, also known as Fez, is one of the most historic and culturally significant cities in Morocco. It’s located in the north-central part of the country and is the second-largest city in Morocco after Casablanca. Fes has a rich and diverse history, with a mix of Arab, Amazigh, and Andalusian cultures. The city is known for its preserved medieval architecture, maze-like streets, and bustling souks. In fact, the Fes Medina, the old fortified part of the city, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the world. Inside the Medina, you’ll find numerous narrow streets lined with shops selling traditional Moroccan goods, such as spices, textiles, and pottery. Fes is also known for its historic monuments, including the University of Al Quaraouiyine, the oldest university in the world that still operates today, and the Bou Inania Madrasa, one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in Morocco. The city’s most recognizable landmark is the minaret of the Kairaouine Mosque, which dominates the skyline of the city. In addition to its historic and cultural attractions, Fes is also a hub of Moroccan cuisine.

for its flavorful street food, including dishes like tagine, couscous, and harira soup. There are also many restaurants and cafes that serve traditional and modern Moroccan cuisine. Fes is a city of contrasts, where the old and new coexist side by side. While the Medina is a step back in time, with its ancient buildings and traditional way of life, the Ville Nouvelle (New City) is a more modern area of the city with wider streets and European-style architecture. Outside of the city, there are several notable attractions, such as the Merenid Tombs, the Fes Royal Palace, and the Jardin Jnan Sbil, a tranquil garden oasis that’s perfect for an afternoon stroll. The surrounding countryside is also home to several natural wonders, such as the Middle Atlas Mountains and the Ifrane National Park, which offer opportunities for hiking, skiing, and wildlife-spotting.
